Only in America do we leave cars worth thousands of dollars in the driveway and lock useless things and junk in boxes in the garage. ~ Yakov Smirnoff

What does your garage man cave say about you (and your family)? Does it look orderly and functional — or is it so jam-packed with stuff that you can’t fit even one car? This is the part of your home that is wide open for all to see. Isn’t it ironic that some man caves look more like landfills? Perhaps because it’s too easy to just toss things in there.

Maybe it’s time to give this space a manly makeover. Here are 10 tips.

1.   Declutter. Remove the clutter and sort what remains into bins or Hefty bags labeled trash, hazardous waste, donate, recycle and Elsewhere (for stuff that doesn’t belong in the garage). Start in one corner and put things into the appropriate container. Distribute the Elsewhere things later.
2.   Plan the space. Decide the specific purposes the garage should serve. For example, have space for one car, a work zone for tools, a gardening zone and a zone for sports gear.
3.   Determine the specific area and amount of space for each zone.
4.   Group similar items in their zones.
5.   Label all containers you use.
6.   Make use of vertical space for items like ladders and tools.
7.   Store hazardous materials safely. Check local resources for hazardous waste collection.
8.   To maintain your results, put things back where they belong immediately after use.
9.   Schedule time in your calendar once a year for general maintenance.
10. The warmer months are best suited for this project when it’s not too hot or cold.

When you’re done, grab a beer and admire your hard work. Maybe you now have the best garage man cave on your block!
